Offline smart home: controlling devices over the local network

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Most smart device apps send every command to the manufacturer's server: when the internet or the server goes down, so does the device. Yet many devices can talk directly over the same Wi-Fi. BluConnect always tries the local path first.

Local, no account

  • Philips Hue (bridge button), WiZ, Yeelight
  • Shelly, older Kasa
  • Samsung, LG, Android TV, Apple TV, Sonos
  • ONVIF/RTSP IP cameras
  • Matter (Wi-Fi and Thread)

Account once, then local

For Tuya / Smart Life, Mi Home, eWeLink and Home Connect, the local key is fetched from the account once. After that it works offline; the cloud is only used away from home or if the local path fails.

One device, two paths

When the same device is found both locally and via the cloud, BluConnect matches them by serial number or MAC address and merges them into one. Commands go local first, then cloud.

FAQ

Local devices while away?
Remote access uses the optional Home Hub; the Hub stays home and your phone connects through it.
